Angus North and Mearns MSP Visits Pipers’ Coffee Shop

Local MSP for Angus North and Mearns, Mairi Gougeon came along to Lathallan School on Friday 22 September to sample some of the cakes and coffee at the school coffee shop and hear about the pupils volunteering and fundraising work. The coffee shop are raising money for Motor Neurone Disease Scotland (MND), Vuyani Safehaven Orphanage in South Africa and will be holding a coffee day next Friday for Macmillan Cancer Care.
Mairi spoke with Coffee Shop Manager, Anna in S6 about her time volunteering at Vuyani Safehaven Orphanage in South Africa.
Anna in S6 said “It was an experience she will never forget.”
The coffee shop are continuing to support the orphanage which Lathallan pupils have volunteered at for 7 years now each summer by donating money from the sales of their coffee and cake.
The coffee shop are also supporting MND Scotland by donating funds and our Boarding Houseparents, Miss Orr and Mr Horne are taking part in a marathon and 10k this weekend in aid of the charity.
Mairi said “It has been fantastic to come along and see the coffee shop enterprise here and listen to pupils talk about their experience volunteering at Vuyani Safehaven Orphanage. Anna in S6 explained how the opportunity to volunteer has shaped her and made her think about her future direction and choices once she leaves school. It is a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to fundraise for worthy charities such as MND Scotland, Vuyani Safehaven Orphanage and Macmillian.”
The school coffee shop runs every Friday afternoon and is managed by S6 pupil Anna Sanger with support of other pupils and the Head of Business Studies, Mr Fernandez. All the pupils receive training from Caber Coffee based in Aberdeen. Pipers’ Coffee Shop is part of the pupils ‘Personal Development Afternoon’ that they have each Friday. The afternoons provide pupils with the opportunity to learn new skills and take part in various activities.
