Age 4 to 5 years

In the final year of Lathallan Nursery, before moving to Lathallan Junior School, the pre-school class (The Badgers) will continue to follow the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence.

Like the Squirrels room, there is a variety of play activities that children learn from throughout the day.

These include an ‘Imaginative/Role Play Corner’ where children can be anyone/anything they want and interact with their peers, as well as Art and Craft Activities – this covers a wide variety of different experiences available to the children. We encourage the children to explore different mediums, painting, drawing, using chalk, pencils, crayons, pens and charcoal. Table Top Activities is where a selection of games, puzzles, construction and imaginative play toys, threading, matching, sorting and naming toys and games, are provided to stimulate talk and thought.

We have a specialist music teacher who visits the nursery on a regular basis to sing songs with the children and introduce them to musical instruments. The children will also experience drama related activities throughout the year.

We have a French teacher who visits the Squirrel and Badger classes on a weekly basis during term time to introduce the children to basic French. The children are encouraged to use simple French words while going about their nursery activities.

We make full use of the extensive grounds at our disposal and are out and about most days. The children have the chance to play in the nursery garden or the walled garden and can explore in the woods or have fun at the beach. We also have access to the school gym.

The Badgers Class have the option to go swimming once a week during term time with qualified swimming teachers.

“the children learn about significant events throughout the year such as Hallowe’en and Winter amongst many others.”
