Pupils in the Senior School spent 5 days of their Christmas break on the Winter Skills Trip in Aviemore. The pupils were lead by the School’s Head of Outdoor Education, Mr Woodhouse, Jonny Newman (Mountain Leader), Ian Stewart (MIC), Liam Malone and Dr Jonjo Knot.
The pupils began their skills training in Coire Chas with an introduction to personal navigation in the winter environment. On the second day the group were introduced to using crampons, Canadian/French Technique, further navigation skills and ice axe breaking.
On day three the pupils completed a mountain journey via Lurcher’s to Cairn Lochan and Sneachda.
Pupils learned new skills such as cover security on steep ground, use of the rope and movement in steeper environments on the fourth day.
The trip was a great success and we are sure that the pupils learned some valuable techniques and skills.
