S1 pupils took part in a three day Winter Skills training programme in Glen Clova in and around the Shank of Drumfallow and Corrie Fee from 22- 24 January. The week started nice and wintery with students all learning the basics of ice axe braking, kit preparation and boot fitting. The second day was colder which gave all the chance to fit and travel in crampons. Pupils had been taught to “walk like John Wayne” and indeed this proved wise words as those who did not adopt the famous star’s bandy legged gait tore their trousers with ill judged steps in crampons. The third day was wild with 70- 100mph winds on the tops and snow to about six hundred metres. Even with good kit and preparation it was a wet day. All were pleased to return to school to dry out and warm up. Thanks go to I Stewart, N Williams and A Martin for helping and working in challenging conditions. Well done to all who took part!
