Learning Outside of the Classroom

Learning Outside of the Classroom

Lathallan is the only all-through school in Scotland to achieve the Silver Learning Outside of the Classroom Quality Mark.

As a result of our broad range of outdoor learning activities, the school is confidently expecting to achieve Gold in 2019.

Central to this is the on-site school farm which teaches children of the ‘farm to fork’ concept over where their food comes from and where it goes to.

Pupils throughout the school are given farming activities such as feeding the pigs and chickens or digging potatoes and picking apples.

We have a wide variety of fresh fruit and vegetables produced on the school grounds and cooked by our highly experienced chefs in the kitchen.

In 2018, the pupils were offered meals in the school dining hall, 60 per cent of which was sourced and cooked on-site and there are ambitious plans to develop farm further.

The pupils also benefit enormously from the expansive wooded grounds and the newly constructed treehouse classroom which provides an inspiring learning environment.

"There are two spiritual dangers in not owning a farm. One is the danger of supposing that breakfast comes from the grocery and the other that heat comes from the furnace." Aldo Leopold
