At Lathallan School, we strive to provide our pupils with real-world learning experiences that go beyond the classroom. We believe that mindset is a key factor in success, whether in academics, careers, or personal ambitions. That’s why we were thrilled to welcome Calum Richardson, owner of the award-winning The Bay Fish & Chips in Stonehaven, to share his incredible journey with our S5 pupils.
Calum is not only a successful entrepreneur but also an adventurer with a passion for pushing his limits. His talk was packed with valuable life lessons, motivation, and stories from his remarkable experiences—ranging from running a thriving business to taking on some of the toughest challenges on earth.

From Business to the World’s Highest Peaks
Calum’s story is one of resilience, determination, and adaptability. He spoke about how his entrepreneurial mindset has not only shaped his career but also prepared him for extreme physical and mental challenges.
Among his many adventures, he shared his experiences:
🏔️ Climbing Kilimanjaro with Nimsdai Purja – the record-breaking mountaineer and star of 14 Peaks on Netflix.
⛏️ Reaching Everest Basecamp – an achievement that requires both mental and physical endurance.
🌎 Attempting Aconcagua – the highest mountain outside of Asia, pushing him to his limits in harsh conditions.
Lessons in Resilience and Mindset
Throughout his talk, Calum emphasised key lessons that have guided him through both business and adventure:
🔹 “Stop, Breathe, Action” – his personal motto for overcoming challenges. When faced with difficulty, the best approach is to pause, assess, and take decisive action.
🔹 There’s nothing you can’t accomplish – success is about finding the leverage, whether that means taking a different approach or choosing a better time to act.
🔹 Be around the best – surrounding yourself with the right people can transform your outlook and help you reach new heights, whether in business, sports, or personal growth.
🔹 Ask better questions – instead of letting self-doubt take over, challenge yourself to ask why and find the best path forward.
His words resonated deeply with our pupils, inspiring them to apply these principles to their own lives—whether in their studies, personal ambitions, or future careers.
The Lathallan Approach: Preparing for Life’s Challenges
At Lathallan, we want our pupils to be thinkers, doers, and adventurers. We recognise that success isn’t just about academic achievements—it’s also about having the right mindset, the ability to problem-solve, and the courage to take on new challenges.
Calum’s visit was a perfect example of how we bring real-world experiences into our pupils’ learning journeys. Whether it’s through inspiring guest speakers, outdoor education, or hands-on projects, we ensure that our students leave Lathallan ready to take on the world.
A Huge Thank You!
We are incredibly grateful to Calum Richardson for taking the time to visit and share his journey. His words and experiences left a lasting impact on our pupils, reminding them that great things happen when you step outside your comfort zone.
And, of course, next time you’re in Stonehaven, make sure to visit The Bay Fish & Chips – one of Scotland’s finest!
