Lathallan has been praised by The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for delivering a sector-leading D of E programme.
The Johnshaven-based school has been the No 1 Independent School in Scotland for D of E for the past five years, with the highest percentage of pupils enrolling and completing the programme at Bronze, Silver and Gold level since 2014.
With trend is set to continue again over the coming years with ambitious yet achievable plans by the school to offer a Mediterranean sailing trip in 2020, Lathallan’s Award programme has received glowing praise from D of E.
In a report published on the D of E website, D of E have hailed Lathallan’s Head of Outdoor Education James Woodhouse for offering “ambitious, adventurous and achievable DofE lessons that make full use of the school’s unique location.”
Lathallan School is just 100 metres from the North Sea coastline and is within an hour and a half’s drive of many of Scotland iconic mountains, with many of the D of E expeditions taking place locally.
The school’s focus on learning beyond the classroom begins at Lathallan Nursery, where children are offered rock scrambling lessons on a North Sea cliff as seen in the video above. This is further developed through the J7 residential and Winter Skills training in S1.
Lathallan has previously been praised in the Scottish Parliament for D of E with a motion by North East Region MSP Liam Kerr.
