Lathallan held an afternoon SOS event on Friday 11th March with a team of parent bakers providing lots of delicious homemade treats to be sold in Pipers’ coffee shop.
Pipers’ coffee shop is run by teachers, pupils and parents of Lathallan School as a social enterprise and entirely focused on giving back to the local community and other charitable causes.
On this occasion, the Lathallan School community rallied together to raise £2,830.81 from the coffee and cake sales which was then generously matched by an anonymous donation from a Lathallan School parent. A further £169.19 was also raised from the coffee shop after this kind donation.
Trustee of the nominated charity Hope and Aid, Steve Walsh said:
“We are so thankful to Lathallan for this support. It is only with donations such as this that we can continue to provide support and deliver aid to those families so badly affected by the horrific events in Ukraine.
We have already delivered two large truck loads of aid this week, one with 187 emergency hospital beds and a second truck loaded with baby supplies, hygiene items and sleeping bags for use with the Ukraine.
I have spent time on the Ukraine border with Romania this week and have seen first-hand the fear and desperation of those affected. Lathallan School’s generous donation will be used to both acquire additional aid as well as help to fund the costs of transporting the aid directly to the border and then the onward delivery within the Ukraine in conjunction with our partner NGO’s.”
Principal Teacher of Business Studies and Computing Science at Lathallan School, Mr Ranjit Fernandez, said:
“When watching the news of the Russian invasion unfolding in Ukraine, our Lathallan community decided to use our resources to do what we can to help people that are being impacted. Due to COVID mitigations, we haven’t been able to open our school coffee shop for almost two years so this was a tremendously successful fundraising event.”
Parent baker, Lindsey Home said:
“This was a fantastic team effort from all the school parents who are involved in Pipers’ coffee shop. It was also made possible by those families who generously made donations by pre-ordering our cake boxes or who came to Pipers’ and donated on the day. The Pipers’ team wanted to help in whatever way we could and raise some funds to help those in Ukraine even if just through baking and cooking. We sold over 700 cakes, bakes and sweets and are very pleased with the final amount raised.”
