We are delighted to announce the appointment of Gavin Calder, Chief Executive of the Harmeny Education Trust, as Chair of the Board of Governors of Lathallan School.
With a career in educational leadership spanning since 1999, including 16 years as a Headteacher, Gavin’s extensive background is rooted in a deep-seated passion for youth development. Originally a teacher of History and Modern Studies, his career includes five years as Deputy Head at Robert Gordon’s College, followed by three years as Deputy Head and Boarding Houseparent at Loretto School. He then spent four years as Head of the Junior School at Lomond School before dedicating thirteen years as Headmaster of Edinburgh Academy’s Junior School, where he was at the forefront of integrating ever-developing best practices.
Since April 2024, Gavin has served as the Chief Executive of the Harmeny Education Trust, a specialist residential and school-term facility supporting young people who have experienced significant early-years trauma. He also sits on the Board of the Scottish Council of Independent Schools (SCIS). Outside of his school leadership roles, Gavin is a passionate advocate for sport, music, and Outdoor Education; he is a trained coach, the Chair of Triathlon Scotland, and holds the role of Chair of the Board for the Scottish Outdoor Education Centres.
Gavin succeeds Derek Cowie. Derek has been deeply involved with Lathallan for many years, both as a dedicated Chair and as a proud parent whose two sons attended Lathallan. Having recently retired after a highly successful career in the North Sea oil industry, he has given a tremendous amount of his time, expertise, and wisdom to our community. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Derek for his leadership and support over the years.
