At Lathallan School, we celebrate all passions, from the rugby pitch to the art studio—and even the world of strategy, imagination, and fantasy. This weekend, Brotherton Castle became a hub of friendly competition as we hosted the Redcaps Cup, a thrilling Magic: The Gathering tournament that brought together 22 students from across Angus and Aberdeenshire.
The event, run by Redcaps Montrose, transformed the school into a battleground of tactical thinking and quick decision-making. Over the course of three exciting rounds, competitors showcased their deck-building expertise, strategic planning, and adaptability. The atmosphere was electric—intense yet welcoming—proving that games like Magic are about much more than just competition.

A Community Built on Strategy and Friendship
Magic: The Gathering isn’t just about playing cards—it’s about critical thinking, problem-solving, and forming connections. Beyond the competition, the event was a fantastic opportunity for students to bond over shared interests and enjoy a day of friendly rivalry and teamwork.
Lathallan’s Brotherton Castle estate is the perfect setting for students to grow, explore new challenges, and build friendships that last a lifetime. Events like this tournament offer pupils a unique way to engage with one another, learn new skills, and most importantly—have fun.
Mr Andersen, who helped oversee the tournament, summed it up perfectly:
“It was great to see so many students from across the county intermingling and competing under the guidance and supervision of Redcaps. The atmosphere was friendly and jovial and sets the scene for future tournaments.”
And the Winner Is…
After hours of impressive gameplay, the final standings were:
🥇 Calan (Lathallan) – First Place
🥈 Harry (Redcaps) – Second Place
A massive well done to Calan, George, Torsten, Reid, and Robbie for representing Lathallan with such skill and sportsmanship. A huge thank you to Redcaps Montrose for organising such a well-run and exciting event.
